PERIOD OF PURPLE CRYING

The Period of PURPLE Crying®

All babies cry - Healthy babies can cry a lot in their first five months of life. The Period of PURPLE Crying® is a trusted, evidence-based program designed to help parents and caregivers with a new way to understand why babies' cry, and how to cope safely during those challenging moments. PURPLE is an acronym that describes a normal phase of infant development that many babies go through, usually starting around 2 weeks of age and improving by 3–4 months.

The Period of PURPLE Crying® helps parents understand that: Crying does not mean you are doing something wrong. This phase is temporary and will pass and crying can be very frustrating—but shaking a baby is dangerous and can cause serious brain injury. By knowing what to expect, parents are better prepared to stay calm and keep their baby safe. The program encourages parents to:

  • Try soothing strategies (feeding, holding, rocking, walking, singing, etc.)
  • Put the baby down safely in a crib and take a short break if needed
  • Ask for help from a trusted adult
  • Remember: It's okay to step away when you feel overwhelmed—your baby will be safe
